Abstract

The low level of students’ mathematical problem-solving ability is indicated by the numerous errors they make in solving word problems related to systems of linear equations in two variables (SPLDV). These errors are influenced by students’ characteristics, one of which is learning style. This study aims to describe the categories of junior high school students’ errors in solving SPLDV word problems viewed from their learning styles. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. The participants were eighth-grade students at a junior high school in Bandung. The findings show that students with a visual learning style tended to make errors in identifying information, formulating mathematical models, applying solution procedures, and drawing conclusions. Students with an auditory learning style tended to make errors during the planning and implementation stages, particularly in formulating mathematical models, determining solution strategies, applying solution procedures, and drawing conclusions. Meanwhile, students with a kinesthetic learning style made errors at all stages of problem-solving, from understanding the problem to writing the final answer, with the most dominant errors occurring in drawing conclusions.
